Amsterdam is extremely bike friendly. You will find the cult Dutch bikes of Amsterdam on every street corner. No wonder – the narrow lanes of the center are a lot better suited for bikes than for cars. Amsterdam counts an estimated half a million bikes and more than 400 km cycling paths.

Renting a bike costs between 5 and 15€ per day. You normally have to pay a deposit of 50 Euro and your identity card or driving licence as a deposit.
Tip - The right bike
Usually, the most simple model with back pedal break is sufficient. You will not really need a gear change in Amsterdam, as the whole city is quite flat. Bikes with handbrakes in the front and rear are safer, but also more expensive.
In the next part we provide you with details about the individual bike rental companies. Mac Bike, Yellow Bike and Black Bikes perfectly cover the city area with numerous bike rental stations.
Mac Bike Rental – Red and Cheap
The classic bike rental service in Amsterdam. You can barely walk a hundred meters in the city without coming across one of the shining red bikes.

Mac Bike has several stores. The largest one is directly at the central station and can hardly be overlooked. The selection of different models is large – you can get everything from standard models with back pedal break to tandems. Of course, there are also bikes with child seats and e-bikes.
Additionally, Mac Bike offers guided bike tours (2 – 3 hours, 20 – 25€).

Black Bikes – Our Favorite Bike Rental in Amsterdam
Black Bikes has 10 stores throughout the city. The exceptional feature of Black Bikes is the classic black style of the bikes. Their construction form is over 100 years old – so why change anything?

The large number of bike rental stations and the long opening hours make Black Bikes our favorite – and you will not immediately be identified as a tourist with the black bikes ;-)

Another advantage is that you can pick up and return the Black Bikes on each bike rental station – unfortunately, that is not always the case. Some rental services require you to bring your bike back to where you got it – not very practical!
Besides the classic back pedal break bikes, they also feature men’s bicycles, tandems, cargo bikes, e-bikes and kids’ bikes etc.
To rent a bike, you need your ID, a credit card and a deposit of 50€. They also offer an additional insurance for 4,50€, which covers theft and damages on the bike.
Ride Like a Local - Tips for Safe Cycling
Some 60 percent of the city’s traffic is made up of cyclists. With such a high traffic volume, smaller collisions do sometimes happen. That does not mean you should be scared. With the well constructed cycling paths, accidents only happen rarely.
On a dutch bike the most important thing is to look awesome ;-)
Our tips for safe cycling in Amsterdam:
- Always lock your bike well. Theft is a serious and frequent issue.
- Never park on pavements or in no parking areas. Wrongly parked bikes are taken away by the police.
- If possible, always drive on the cycling paths and on the right side. Stop at red traffic lights.
- Always give way for traffic coming from the right.
- Never unexpectedly stop or change the direction. Indicate changes in direction with hand signs.
- Be careful with trams and taxis. They have right of the way in certain streets.
- The thin tires tend to get stuck in tram rails. It is best to cross the rails diagonally or in a right angle.
